Rites of Passage - Get Involved

You can make opportunities for young people of Afrikan descent.

Studies show that young people of Afrikan descent are being held back by poverty, violence and low education. In Toronto 140,000 young people of Afrikan decent are being excluded from mainstream prosperity, particularly those who live in one of Toronto’s 13 “priority neighbourhoods” identified by  United Way Toronto’s “Poverty by Postal Code” report.

Rites of Passage helps young people find their purpose in life, contribute positively to their community and find the resiliency to navigate their turbulent lives. Rites of Passage has proved life-changing results:

• 100% of the youth found and kept meaningful summer employment and many have continued in full time and part time work, opening economic opportunities. This also showed the youth that they are welcome in Toronto and not “stuck” in their neighbourhoods.

• Improvement in emotional competence as indicated in EQi testing. The EQi reports on 5 major emotional areas of competence: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Stress Management, Adaptability, and General Mood.  Initial results suggest participants score higher after participating in Rites of Passage.

• 75% of the youth demonstrated their commitment to being community leaders by volunteering their time in community projects after Rites of Passage.
