Launched in 2004 by WoodGreen, Homeward Bound is a transformational, coordinated service delivery model that brings together the key supports families need to become self-supporting, all under one roof.
Unique in Canada, Homeward Bound is a holistic, 4-year job-readiness program featuring: affordable housing; free, quality child care; training and post-secondary education in a marketable skill; personal development support; mental health and recreational services for children; and a guaranteed, family-sustaining career opportunity at the end of the program.
Homeward Bound is facilitated by an Industry Council with representatives from banking, technology, law, and public sectors, with financial support from both public and private partners.
Since 2004, 72 families have made their home at Homeward Bound and the accomplishments of the mothers have been significant. Graduates are now in career track positions such as law clerk, data management officer, and technical services analyst, working at companies such as CIBC, BMO, and Scotiabank.
A model with great potential for application in other urban centres, Homeward Bound has won a number of prestigious awards including:
Homeward Bound has been so successful that WoodGreen has been funded by The Ontario Trillium Foundation to establish a second Homeward Bound in Peel Region, as well as a Homeward Bound ‘How-To’ Kit for distribution across Ontario.
